How to Use Gradebook

HAC-Button-RGB-webWhen checking Gradebook to keep track of student progress, it is important to remember that grades will continually fluctuate throughout the semester.  Some grades will change daily, others weekly.  The only time grades are “set” are when they are submitted for midterm and finals.  Similarly, when checking “missing assignment reports,” these can often be misleading.  Unless you see a “z” as a grade it may be that the assignment just has yet to be input.  Gradebook shows any BLANK or MISSING grades in this report, so there are times when it looks like more assignments are missing than is true.  In this event, pull up the actual grades and see if it is blank, scored, or a X/ Z.  X/Z  symbols standing for exempt or missing.  E (exempt) means the student has been excused from the assignment and will not receive any penalty; however, nor will they receive any credit.  Z (missing) means the student has not turned in the assignment, but still may, and it does affect their credit.  Zeros are only input if a score actually merits no points, Z’s are always used to indicate that an assignment was not turned in. If you notice that the grade is followed by a “.1” it means the grade is affected by tardiness.

As always, any questions feel free to send an email or call my office.  When referring to grades, it is always helpful if you can provide the specific titles and assignments of concerns within the first email or message.
